The tradition of ballet performances grew out of the courts in seventeenth-century France. The patrons were the aristocrats or royalty. We continue that tradition today, bringing together music, dance, and drama in a movement language that has been developed over three-hundred years. American Repertory Ballet and its affiliate Princeton Ballet School are both maintained by the Princeton Ballet Society. The Princeton Ballet School, founded in 1954 by Audreé Estey, is one of the largest not-for-profit dance schools in the nation. The Antelope Valley Ballet is an exciting performing company established in 1998 as a non-profit organization to be a positive force in the cultural climate of the Antelope Valley. Applegate Dance Studio was founded by director Lisa Applegate in 1992. The studio has had three moves and settled into its current location in 1997. The Studio has staged more than 20 full-length performances, attended by more than 18,000 theater-goers. The Studio has participated in more than 30 dance competitions. In 1983, a group of 18 local community leaders and citizens formed a committee to identify a nationally-ranked, artistically mature ballet company that the South Bay could adopt as its own. Berkeley Ballet Theater is located in the Julia Morgan Center for the Arts, 2640 College Ave, Berkeley, CA 94704. The facility was originally designed by Julia Morgan as St. John's Presbyterian Church in 1908. Westside Ballet Company, a nonprofit organization, is one of the nation's premier ballet training companies. A Pre-Professional Dance Company Formed in 1980, the Pasadena Civic Ballet Company (PCB) is a not-for-profit organization of pre-professional and professional dancers from ages 10 and up.
